Sad news...Ms. Feefack Buffein was presumably lost in T. F.
Green Airport in Providence, Rhode Island, the last weekend in April. We were
traveling to our friend Diana’s reunion in Marion, Massachusetts. FeeFee was
last seen being tossed in the air and caught by Lucas near the rental car
counter. We didn’t realize she was gone until bedtime that night. Mentally retracing
our steps, we figured out that she most likely was dropped between the rental
car counter and the place where you pick up your car about two miles away.

Over the weekend, we called the airport and rental car lost
and found numbers repeatedly. [Sidenote: the airport police, who handle lost
articles, are wonderful people. We called them a half-dozen times, and they
always took very seriously our request to look for “a small child’s light green
blanket with a moon embroidered on the front, actually a sleepsack with a
broken zipper”.] On our return flight,
we visited all the customer service counters we could find, to no avail.

Lucas had a great time at the house in Marion, but would
occasionally lapse into a quick fit of whines or tears for Feefack. When it became apparent in the airport on our
way home that she wasn’t coming with us, he was pretty stoic about it, though
immensely sad. He still brings her up regularly. Yesterday at breakfast he asked,
apropos of nothing, “Why didn’t anyone
turn Feefack in to the lost and found??”

The week after we the trip, mom took Lucas to Babies R Us to
pick out a replacement sleepsack. He was very interested in all the new styles,
but insisted he wanted a green one with a moon on the front. Then we went down
the blanket aisle and he thought maybe he’d like a blankee instead. Then he
spotted a small, square, pink blanket/cuddly with Piglet’s head attached. He
went crazy. “I want that! That one! Piglet! PIGLET!”
Piglet, unfortunately, has only filled a small part of the
sleepsack emotional void. We miss you, Ms. Feefack Buffein, and hope things are
pleasant for you, wherever you are.
