We went to a baby shower this weekend. (As a sidenote, I can't remember our last baby shower. That is a side-effect of infertility: We boycotted them for years!) The expectant father's parents went back to his house afterward and debriefed with him and his wife. "Who is Lucas?" they asked. They were convinced he was much older than two, and that he was brilliant. He had a cup of ice in one hand and a water bottle in the other. He set the water bottle down on the top of a cooler, picked a piece of ice out of his cup, and tried to stick it into the water bottle. It didn't fit. Then he put the ice in his mouth and sucked on it. A minute later he took it out and tried it again, and it fit.
Objectivity isn't all it's cracked up to be. Jill saw the same sequence of events and, based on a detailed knowledge of Lucas behavior, thought it was more random than deliberate -- he just got lucky, as far as she can tell -- but hey, that doesn't mean he isn't brilliant!
