Tonight at bedtime Lucas picked up an eensie-weensie spider book that came home with us from Grandma Sally's.
L: Grandma's house spider book soon going?
J: Do you want to go back to Grandma's house soon?
L: Yeah! (Very enthusiastically.)
After the spider book we read Owl Moon, which has lots of scenes of the woods at night. On each page Luke would point to the darkest part of the woods and ask "Deer?" On the only page in the book that has a deer he pointed to the dark woods instead and said "Deer? deer?" even after he had seen the deer drawing. All weekend at Grandma Sally's he had asked about deer whenever we were in or near the woods. It seems to be a coping mechanism, since the woods are kind of scary to him.
