Words

Luke's vocabulary is starting to take off. As near as we can remember, he says 8 words more-or-less correctly:
  • Mama
  • Dada
  • Bubble
  • Hi
  • Bye
  • Bee (there was a plant at our vacation cabin that he and the bees both loved...)
  • Down
  • Puppy
He uses 10 more words consistently--he applies them to the right things and does it pretty frequently--though he pronounces them in his own way:
  • Boat ("bo")
  • Duck ("du")
  • Ball ("ba", also used for balloon)
  • Fish ("sh")
  • More ("mo-mo")
  • Jackson ("dak-o")
  • Dog ("daw")
  • Cat ("dat")
  • Bird ("bur")
  • Baby ("beh-bay")
As you can see, a couple of these are pretty close to correct, so you might move them to the first list.

There are a few words he's said correctly once or twice, mostly by mimicking us, but that don't really seem to be part of his vocabulary. For example, a couple of weeks ago he repeated "Volvo" when we pointed out a Volvo driving by -- though unlike his friend Otis, who turns two in a couple of months, he can't independently announce that he's just spotted a Volvo. Just this week he's gotten a lot more interested in trying to copy the things we say, which makes it a lot of fun to try to teach him new words and names! (His very good friends and honorary aunt and uncle Kristin and Greg were among the first to get him to repeat back their names this way.)

UPDATE: Later the same day I posted this, Lucas came home saying "gee" when he saw my keys! I also forgot that he can say "hot" (mostly about my coffee and anything cooking on the stovetop) and "ba" for "bath" -- and how could we forget "nahhhh" for "no"? So he's at least up above 20 words now. And at daycare today he mimicked Diane when she said "Big Boy!"
