Making connections

Lucas asked for "a new song, one I never heard before!" at bedtime tonight so I sang him Neil Young's "Helpless". At the end he asked:

L: What "Helpless helpless helpless helpless" mean?
D: He's just saying the word "helpless" over and over again. Do you know what that word means?
L: No. What "helpless" mean?
D: It means you feel like you can't control something, that you can't do anything about it. He's singing about his old home from a long time ago, and now it's locked up and he can't do anything about it. He can't do anything about a lot of things, all the changes that are happening to him.
L: [thinks]
D: Do you ever feel helpless?
L: [thinks] No. Where my old home?
D: You don't have one. You've always lived in the same home.
L: [thinks]. Kristin has a helpless home!
D: That's right! Kristin and Greg moved to Indiana, and their old home is here in Ann Arbor.

The stuff he comes up with.....

It's true! Our poor old house is helpless now that it's been 1/4 re-painted for more than a year(in ugly colors, I might add) and my gardens are not tended to!
