Lucas has been learning about trees. He has a new book called "A Tree Is Nice", and we have been talking about trees around our yard.
We were at the park the other day, and there are a few trees on the corner closest to our house. Luke can barely reach the branches. I told him to jump up and touch the leaves, and when he touched the pine needles on one of the trees he yelped, "ouch!" We talked a lot about the pine trees -- how their needles are pointy, and how pinecones grow on them. We found a pinecone on the ground and then daddy knocked a couple more pinecones off the tree. Luke was really interested in them. Then we touched another tree that wasn't a pine tree (sadly that's as specific as I can get; if we are going to teach Luke about trees I need to start learning about the different types myself!) and when Luke felt the leaves he said "soft!"
This morning when I dropped him off at daycare he climbed onto a play structure that has a window. He looked through the window, and he could see all the way through the kitchen to the outdoors, where there are a whole bunch of trees.
L: Trees, dada!
D: That's right. I see a pine tree.
L: (smiling) Pinecone!
