Mama angst

When we pulled into the driveway Luke asked if Mama was home. "No, I'm sorry honey, she has a meeting tonight." As always, this news made him burst into an unhappy lament.

Later when we were reading his Miss Mary Mack book from the library he started pretending that everyone in the book was Mama. First, he pointed to a plausibly maternal-looking woman and exclaimed "Mama!" Then he found a grandma-looking lady and announced that she, too, was mama. Next, I am duty-bound to report, he pointed to the elephant and exclaimed impishly: "Mama!" (This blog is a completely factual record of events and censorship can have no place in it.) Finally he pointed at the little dog and again announced "Mama!"

During dinner he decided that Mama was actually home.

L: Mama in the bathroom.
D: Really? What's she doing there?
L: Cleaning.
D: Oh, I see.
L: Got home early.

After dinner we went outdoors with his stroller (the one he pushes, not the one he gets pushed in) and he decided that he was going to deliver a pizza to mama. So I pulled a leaf off a tree and told him it was a pizza; he placed it in his stroller and rolled towards the door.

On the changing table he told me fairly pathetically: "I miss my mom!"

We actually had a lot of fun together, us two boys, but he is just crazy about his mama.

Happy ending: Just as I was starting to read him his bedtime stories, I got a text message from mama saying she was almost home. When I broke the news to Luke he literally burst into applause.

Mama put Lucas to bed and they had a very nice time.
