Well Baby Visit Gone Bad!

Lucas had his 18-month well-baby exam today. It started out fine: The nurse showed him the office goldfish, which Luke likes, and they had lots of fun weighing and measuring him. (Weight 28 lbs. 3 oz, 74th %ile; Height 33.5 inches, 76th %ile; head 19.5 inches, 88th %ile.) Then we went into the exam room, and Luke explored all the fun medical equipment for a while.

He decided he wanted to get up on the exam table, so we lifted him up there and let him sit down on it. All was well for a few minutes until we turned our backs momentarily and, at that exact moment, Lucas decided he wanted to hop down. Well, it was about 3 feet to the floor, and on the way down he apparently whacked his ankle on the metal foot-step at the bottom.

At least we were in a doctor's office! Luke's doc took a look and it didn't seem to be too bad, though to be safe she gave us a form to get an x-ray if the pain got worse. They gave him some Motrin and he was able to go to daycare afterwards, limping a little but able to play with his friends.

Unfortunately when he woke up from his nap the Motrin had worn off, and when he tried to stand up from snack he fell down. So Jill came to get him and take him to get that x-ray after all. He was a little scared of the big machines, but he was a very brave boy and didn't fight with the radiologists at all. Good job, Lucas!

The doctor will get the x-rays in the morning and be able to tell us whether there's anything to be concerned about. We emailed her letting her know the x-rays were on the way, and she was nice enough to call shortly afterwards to ask us a few questions and offer some advice and reassurance. The bottom line is that it doesn't sound too bad, though we will probably try to keep him off his leg tomorrow (assuming the pain doesn't disappear overnight).
