Half Birthday

Luke turned one-and-a-half yesterday. He and dad have been sick, so the celebration got delayed until today when we felt a little better.

Luke celebrated by not eating his sausage risotto for dinner. He apparently knew to save room for the main event: A baby-sized cupcake that mom bought downtown, with a little frozen yogurt on the side. As you can see in the photo, his cupcake had one-and-a-half candles on it.

We sang a round of "happy birthday" to him. They've been having pretend birthdays a lot at daycare so he knows the song well. He was pretty surprised to hear us singing it at first; we made it halfway through before he tried to grab the cupcake!

We told him to blow the candles out and he did try a couple of times, though he doesn't quite blow hard enough yet.

After he gobbled the cupcake down, he started trying to remember the words to the birthday song. He said "hap!" and "you!", or something like that, and looked at us expectantly. So we sang the song again, and when we were done he immediately reached over towards the (empty) cupcake box asking for more. He thought it was like a magic spell: Sing the song and a cupcake appears.

Happy half-birthday, Lucas!
