Lucas has a bad cough, but he is very sweet in the middle of the night when he needs help. We sat in the dark bathroom with the shower running to steam up the room and talked about bones for a while. I explained that a human has 206 bones.
L: How many do babies have?
D: Well, I think they have the same number as grownups do, but I'm not sure. [Turns out, according to Wikipedia, that babies have more bones than adults--about 300!]
L: What about a cat?
D: Hmmm, good question. We could ask Fan's mama. Do you remember what she does at work?
L: Takes care of animals. [Robin is a vet]
D: Right.
L: What about a moose? How many bones does a Moose have?
D: I don't know, we'll have to look it up. Can I ask you a trick question?
L: [nods]
D: How many bones does a shark have?
L: None!
D: Right! What do they have instead?
L: Cartilage. [we read a book about fish a month or two ago...]
D: Right! You know a lot, Lucas!
After this he returned to moose, reminding me that moose charge people and that you should never tease a moose.
