Brutally honest

We read The Cat in the Hat tonight.

As you'll undoubtedly remember, the cat shows up unannounced at the house of two grade school kids who have been left home alone all day (that's the way they rolled in 1957), makes a gigantic mess, and then cleans the whole thing up just seconds before mom arrives back home. The final page asks:

And Sally and I did not know
What to say.
Should we tell her
The things that went on there that day?
Should we tell her about it?
Now, what SHOULD we do?
Well...
What would YOU do
If your mother asked YOU?

I looked expectantly at Lucas as he thought and thought about this moral quandary. Then he announced: "I would ignore her question."
