Lucas and duck confit have a sort of history. Every year, David offers to cook a seven-course dinner for four at the charity auction held by his school. Before Luke was born, last year's dinner had been scheduled for May 24, which would have been well in advance of his scheduled mid-June arrival. When we found out just a week ahead of time that Luke would actually be arriving on May 23, David had already started making duck confit for one of the courses, since it should be made well in advance to give it time to develop its flavors. So the dinner was postponed, and we had 6 duck legs submerged in fat in our fridge when Luke was born. Two of our would-be dinner guests joked that we would be up at 3am feeding the baby and eating a midnight snack of duck legs. They ended up getting Luke a beautiful hand-made fleece blanket as a gift, and they made sure it was adorned with...you guessed it...a duck!

We have a nine-month checkup next week and will post the results!
